Music is a rich language, allowing musicians to communicate with their audience at a fundamental human level. Through music, we capture emotion and channel it to our listeners. Some music leads to dance, some leads to introspection, but it's always a connection at the heart. Just as important, performing musicians hear the audience and feel them, the other half of the musical conversation. The response of the listeners further feeds the musicians and the music. It's a dynamic interaction between musicians and audience, with positive feedback in both directions. For musical performers, capturing music in the recording studio can never replace the pure energy and human interaction that occurs at a live performance. As any performer knows all too well, the music we hear on stage is colored very differently than the music our audience hears. The reason is due to simple physics -- our ears are in a very different position in the overall soundscape than theirs. The room itself changes the nature of the sound waves, with a mixture of reflective and absorptive surfaces. Each person in the room also absorbs sound energy, and the room effect changes with the size and density of the audience. From the stage, it is challenging for musicians to understand what the audience hears, as well as the subtleties of their response. Knowing what the listeners hear opens new doors to the performer-listener interaction. How can musicians better understand the true audience experience that they are providing? The best answer is through the live recording. Carefully placed high-quality microphones in the room allow us to capture the true essence of the audience experience, as it occurs during the performance. Recording the live performance allows musicians to review and refine how their music sounds to the listeners, and how the listeners react. The Name The founding concept of Coperto Soundworks was to provide a means for live music recording which is virtually invisible to the performers, the "fly-on-the-wall" metaphor. Searching for a name for the newly-formed company, we dipped into our Italian heritage and found the word coperto, which translates to hidden, unseen. And so Coperto Soundworks is dedicated to the behind-the-scenes support of the artists that we serve. We're not doing this to establish our own glory, but rather to be a part of the invisible support team that helps our clients find their glory. |
