- System requirements development -- identify and describe the key requirements (functionality,

- System design synthesis -- define an architecture of subsystem elements (mechanical
hardware, electrical/electronic hardware, software) which implements the desired system
- System design analysis -- perform a quantitative assessment of the system architecture, using
an appropriate combination of analytical and simulation-based models, to verify the
effectiveness of the design
